ReTensioning®
Enable Real Change in Your Clients
Clinicians use many manual therapeutic techniques to promote relaxation, ease, comfort in a client but the underlying reason for using any technique is to improve a client’s ability to move.
There are techniques to change the pliability or strength of soft tissues, techniques to shift the alignment of bones to one another, techniques to promote blood and lymph flow in injured tissues, techniques to improve energy flow, and many more. The common thread of all these interventions is that the practitioner is actively directing changes in the client’s structure.
ReTensioning® is different
ReTensioning® is a manual, kinesthetic, educational technique to assist a client in changing themselves. Practitioners provide very gentle, specific sensory input to help a client dissipate the forces created by their tissues that result in strain at a specific joint.
ReTensioning® techniques allow a client to change the mechanical forces in their own body in a manner and at a pace that integrates with their concept of who they are and how things should feel. Because the client orchestrates the changes the positive effects are easily retained and practitioner bias of what “should“ happen is avoided.
For a practitioner, ReTensioning® has many benefits. Application of the techniques is easy on the practitioner’s body. It is a tool to treat multiple areas of dysfunction in a coordinated manner and provides a way to treat the whole body in a manner that results in relief of dysfunction in a specific place. Most importantly, RT gives a practitioner a new way to think about the body and how to change a client’s mechanical functioning in a constructive wholistic manner.

Meet John
John A. Macy PT specializes in working with clients who are recovering from acute injuries or dysfunction and also clients who seek to maximize their ability to move and perform in activity, whether performing artists or average people like himself, who want movement in life to be more vibrant and easier.
Since 1980 John has been studying techniques for improving human function and movement control when he began to study The Alexander Technique and then became a Physical Therapist in 1984. He has studied a variety of techniques that focus on improving human movement, alignment, soft tissue dysfunction and neurological control including Muscle Energy, Craniosacral Therapy, NDT, Strain-Counterstrain, Postural Restoration, Tai Chi, yoga, and Pilates. Complementing John’s training is broad experience in direct patient care with experience working across the country in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health and outpatient clinics. For the last 25 years he has worked in an outpatient setting with an emphasis on helping people return not just to baseline functioning but to reach and maintain their best movement ability.
John has taught workshops in movement reeducation and manual therapy techniques across the United States and in Europe and is the creator of ReTensioning®, a gentle method to restore structural balance in the soft tissues of the body.
When John is not seeing clients or teaching, he likes to draw and paint the places he goes fishing at.

Finally, a new technique that I can use that really helps my clients and is not so physically demanding on the therapist….
